Curlew

I was forced to park my car in an unfamiliar area of The University of Queensland when we were there a few weeks ago.

This little chap greeted me as I got out of the car. I believe him to be a Bush Stone Curlew - please tell me if I am wrong.

I thought that I would try to capture him in an acceptable image at 1600 iso on the Canon. I am continuing to try to learn different aspects of this new camera and I was wondering about its high iso capabilities. It was a very overcast afternoon, so it was a perfect opportunity to practice shooting in the shadows. (Canon 450D, efs 55-250mm)

Boyd,

Yes, this is a Curlew, commonly called a Thick-knee. These are relatively common here in Brisbane.

Thanks,
sdm

Thanks Shane.
I am not very good at my bird identification ... should really get one of those books to help me look a little more knowledgeable ...

Hey Boyd, great nature shot - very professional looking indeed, nice and sharp too! Was this taken at the long end of your telephoto? Unfortunately my cheap Nikon 300mm is very soft at maximum zoom, however your Canon lens seems to perform well.
Cheers,
Martin.

Hi Martin, yes this was the long end and shot as wide open as it would go (about f5.6 I think) ... I seem to prefer the aperture priority mode - habits from using the oly kit dies hard ...
