Drop In

I worked a little later than I intended on Friday night and thought that I would wander past the Treasury Casino to take the last few frames in my film. It was quite dark by the time I got there and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, so I wasn't sure if there would be enough interest to have a postable shot.

My attempts turned out better than I expected, given that I didn't look directly through the viewfinder and was using my fingers as a makeshift tripod ... actually, I had the camera resting on the top of a police sign, which was too tall for me to line up, but I could still see a bit of the image in the glass of the viewfinder and guessed the rest.

The shots from this angled were far more successful than the shots I took from the bridge ... I soon found out that the vibrations caused by the traffic do not make for very good images ... (om2n, zuiko 35mm f2.8, hp5+ @ 400)

City Reach revisited

I know that I have posted City Reach previously with an image from almost this same spot, but with a new camera and some time on my hands, what was one to do?

I had some spare time when on my way to collect my daughter from a school outing and was going past the Kangaroo Pt cliffs. This was really an excuse to continue to learn some of the characteristics of how the Canon 450D reacts to some long exposures using the kit 18-55mm lens towards its longer end.

Not much more to say really, so I hope you enjoy.

Tourists in our own town - Part 1

One of the reasons that I have enjoyed posting to Monochrome Brisbane is because it forces me to see things from different perspectives. In setting an assignment to produce an image that a tourist might take away as somehow capturing the city was another way of forcing a different point of view.

My selected shot captures a view of the Story Bridge taken looking west from atop the cliffs near Newfarm. The buildings from the central business district rise in the background and the foreground shows the river that winds its way through the city from east to west.

I admire the majesty of this old steel span bridge and have featured it in a number of other posts. For this assignment I thought that a night shot revealing its twinkling outline with the more modern structures behind and languid river below would tell a tale about Brisbane life that tourists might recognise after only a day or two. City Reach

This is a departure from my ususal postings and is inspired by Martin's 2006 post called Monochrome Brisbane. I had to make a trip across town the other evening and decided to take the opportunity and stop at the top of the Kangaroo Pt cliffs with camera and tripod. The original colour versions of these are posted at another site, but I decided to desaturate them and also post here. I will need to revisit this location with some trusty HP5 loaded to experiment more with exposure and composition. (Mamiya 645pro, sekor 80mm f2.8, f11, Kodak Portra 400vc @ 400)

In & Out

A blast from the past that fits my "Line" theme. I shot this image with Fuji Superia 100 in late 2004 but I have never been happy with it in colour. I thought that I would play with the scanner, desaturate it and let the graphic elements shine in black and white. If you are wondering, it is taken from the top of the walkway at the Regatta Hotel Ferry Stop. It is not my usual type of shot, but it is sometimes interesting to revist early frames to see how your style changes over time. I hope you enjoy.

Monochrome Brisbane

Taken this very evening rom the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs whilst in the company of the motley crew (Infocus Community Camera Group). I sometimes need to remind myself that night shots don't always need colour to prop them up, (well I don't think so anyway). The title suggested itself.

Special Assignment (Part II) - The 3x3 Project Sequel (Parallels)
(Click above link to access individual images)

Following on from the success of the original 3x3 project, I volunteered a theme for the sequel, a CBD street shot after dark, and an initial subject. Apart from the condition that the photographs were to be taken after sunset and before dawn, and must include some aspect of the street (in any way, shape or form); there were no real constraints regarding composition. I personally found shooting black and white under these conditions quite a challenge. However I think the results confirm what all "great" photographers already know, and that is there are worthwhile pictures everywhere, of every kind, irrespective of light quantity, quality or colour. My fellow MB'ers certainly seem to be aware of this.

This 3x3 assignment has been dubbed "Parallels", given that the CBD streets chosen, (Mary Street, Queen Street, and Adelaide Street) run (you guessed it!) parallel to each other.
